![]() ![]() Once you've gotten a hang of basic movement and interaction (you are going to be F-ing a lot of people… and objects), your first taste of combat begins. When that's done, you've got to mess around with the internal force fields at a control panel down the hall (with F). So you get there and are told by a medical hologram that you've got to scan a patient (with F). When you get to the bridge, you're told that the Borg are attacking some nearby allied ships (because the Borg are evil), and that you're being beamed down, alone, to save the day. Basic controls consist of WASD to move around, and F to interact with flashing objects and people. Once you've assembled something of beauty in the creator, the game starts you off in the living quarters of your craft, with a call (through a dialogue box) that the ship's bridge needs your assistance. ![]() Chudderson, for example, captains the U.S.S. You can also name your ship, give your character a full name, and even write a biography. I took my time and crafted the single ugliest alien I could possibly muster in the editor, decked him out in a fluorescent uniform, and lovingly nicknamed him Chud. In each section there are a few defaults to choose from, or you can hit "random" and let fate, the cruel mistress, decide. All of the sections include sliders and add-ons to create all the bony ridges, dreadlocks and antennae the franchise is known for. The editor is divided into a few sections, including facial features, body size and shape and clothing options. Naturally, I decided to make my own adorable alien, so after I chose the career (tactical officer!) and the racial abilities, I got to work with the race editor. You might choose a few bonuses that would help during starship combat, or you might pick up powerful hand-to-hand abilities, or even telepathic abilities that help you spot hidden enemies and launch telekinetic attacks. While the pre-made races offer decent traits, it is likely that the more serious players will, once they get a solid grasp of the game, go back and start a character from scratch and choose racial benefits that are focused towards their style of play. Traits range from subtle passive buffs (increases to resistances and stats) to strong activated abilities (ranged knockback, temporary power increases). You can choose from six pre-made races (Human, Andorian, Bajoran, Bolian, Vulcan and Ferengi, each with their own racial traits), or create your own from the leftover bits of other races, and choose your own four racial traits. At least from the start of the game, the differences aren't that noticeable, though as you progress and skills begin to compound, the classes diverge. Engineering has a focus on buffing you and your allies, science is all about debuffing your enemies, and tactical is centered on doing lots of damage. Upon beginning a game of Star Trek Online, you are tasked with choosing to start in either the engineering, science or tactical careers, which are essentially the classes of the game. ![]()
